First scan - 13 weeks

Today is my 32nd birthday and the first time that we saw our little baby moving about inside my uterus. It was really a very special ocassion. The ultrasound first showed it lying very peacefully on it's back, but the sonographer had to chivvy it into action by prodding me in order that the baby moved into the right position for her to measure. The baby looked like it stretched its arms up past its head and shuffled around a bit. It was incredible to see it move like a person. You can see the big head and small body, the arms and legs and feet, the stomach and the heart beating, and on the head you could see the nose and chin. It is about 3 inches long at the moment.

I felt nervous prior to going into the scan because the scan is mainly to check for Down's syndrome probability, but the measurements on the baby of the fluid behind the head are small, which mean the probability of Down's is reduced from 1 in 500 to 1 in 2000. There are no guarantees, but this is a comfortable number.

The baby is normal length, although a little below average, which Nick seemed very surprised at - given his height, but it is too early to tell too much at this stage. The next scan will be in 7 weeks - at week 20, and there will be lots more to see then.

I have been feeling OK recently - still a bit tired, but doesn't seem quite so bad. The problem is I cannot sleep properly and keep waking up at 3 or 4am and feeling wide awake until about 5am. I do feel pretty hungry at times, and am rewarding myself with a big take away curry tonight to celebrate the results and my birthday!

A couple of weeks ago - at 11 weeks - I had lower abdominal pains that surged every 3 seconds which made me very worried. I phoned NHS Direct and all the other potential symptoms of a miscarriage were not present, so I just rested for the day. I happened a couple of days later, but seems OK and has not happened since. It is so difficult and at times alarming to know what is going on when you have these pains, but it could just be ligaments stretching to accommodate the expanding uterus.

I told Eddie on Friday and he was very pleased for me. I will tell other work people this week, but it feels odd - I mean, what do I do - just go up to people and say - oh, by the way, am pregnant? I don't know - not really me. I will wait for some opportunity to tell somone then see if they jst tell others. Will be great that people know, then I don't have to worry that people may guess etc.
